An Update of ARCHER, a Monte Carlo Radiation Transport Software Testbed for Emerging Hardware Such as GPUs

چکیده
Heterogeneous computing systems involving the graphics processing unit (GPU) and other accelerators such as the coprocessor are playing an increasingly important role in scientific computing. However, none of the existing production Monte Carlo (MC) radiation transport codes were designed to take advantage of such heterogeneous computer architectures. In this paper, we describe the development of a software package, called ARCHER Accelerated Radiation-transport Computations in Heterogeneous EnviRonments, which is designed as a software testbed for research on how to accelerate Monte Carlo calculations using the Nvidia GPU and the Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor.

Evaluation of Vectorized Monte Carlo Algorithms on Gpus for a Neutron Eigenvalue Problem
Conventional Monte Carlo (MC) methods for radiation transport computations are “history-based”, which means that one particle history at a time is tracked. Simulations based on such methods suffer from thread divergence on the graphics processing unit (GPU), which severely affects the performance of GPUs. To circumvent this limitation, event-based vectorized MC algorithms can be utilized. A ver...

ARCHER-CT and ARCHER-Neutron are Monte Carlo photon and neutron transport applications that have now been updated to utilize CPU, GPU and MIC computing devices concurrently. ARCHER detects and simultaneously utilizes all CPU, GPU and MIC processing devices that are available. A different device layout and load-balancing algorithm is implemented for each Monte Carlo transport application. ARCHER...
متن کاملComparison of I-131, I-123 Absorbed Dose and Tc-99m in Thyroid Scanning Using MCNP Code in ORNL-MIRD Phantom
Introduction: Thyroid cancer is at the ninth from ten of common malignant cancer. A man has higher risk to get Thyroid cancer that a woman has. This organ is lain near human neck. The use of radioactive I-131, I-123 and Tc-99m for diagnosis of thyroid cancer has a risk where other organs around Thyroid will accept dose of radiation. One of the risks is large dose which is accep...
متن کاملSecondary Particles Produced by Hadron Therapy
Introduction Use of hadron therapy as an advanced radiotherapy technique is increasing. In this method, secondary particles are produced through primary beam interactions with the beam-transport system and the patient’s body. In this study, Monte Carlo simulations were employed to determine the dose of produced secondary particles, particularly neutrons during treatment. Materials and Methods I...
